There are three components to paint:
- Pigment - promotes hiding capabilities, adds color, and/or creates aesthetic properties.
- Resin/Binder - used for adherence to different substrates.
- Solvent - advances flow properties for application.
When the decision is made to paint a surface it will be for one of three reasons:
- To give new appearance and beauty.
- To protect the surface.
- To protect people and the environment.
Most coating purchases are made when a surface needs protecting. However, purchases for aesthetic reasons also involve consideration of protection based on cost per square foot, per year of service life.
The life of concrete or steel can be extended three ways:
- Overdesign - fabricate thicker concrete or steel .
- Change the physical or chemical process attacking the concrete or steel structure.
- Use protective paint.
Using protective paint is the least expensive method.
When considering the use of protective paint, determining the real cost is an important step in the process. The four main cost items for consideration are:
- Surface preparation
- Application
- Paint materials
- Clean up
Depending on the type of material used the cost and percentage of cost associated with each item will vary. For example, in thin film (4 mils) systems the paint costs would be about 15%, in thick film (250 mils) systems the paints costs would be about 50% of the total cost.
